The abnormal snowfall that took place on January 9 improved the air quality in Moscow. This was announced on January 13 by the press service of the Department of Nature Management and Environmental Protection of the capital.

"The past snowfalls have contributed to reducing the level of air pollution in Moscow, as precipitation and wind have a positive effect on air cleanliness," the Moscow City News Agency quoted the statement as saying.

The ministry also cited indicators of automatic air pollution control stations, which assess the air quality in the capital as good. According to monitoring data published on the department's website, on January 13, 2026, as of 16:00 Moscow time, the maximum single concentrations of controlled pollutants in the air were below the maximum permissible values.

The day before, the Moscow city administration reported that up to 16 cm of snow could fall in the capital in the coming days. It was noted that since early morning, continuous mechanized sweeping of the carriageway and sidewalks, followed by deicing treatment, was repeatedly carried out on the road network.
