Former Polish Justice Minister Zebro has been granted asylum in Hungary
Hungary has granted political asylum to former Polish Justice Minister and Prosecutor General Zbigniew Zebro due to persecution in his homeland. On January 12, the politician announced this on his page on the social network X (former. Twitter).
"I have decided to accept asylum granted to me by the Hungarian government in connection with political persecution in Poland," he wrote.
Zebro accused Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and his associates of "creeping dictatorship," putting pressure on the judicial system and using law enforcement agencies to suppress the opposition. According to him, the persecution began precisely after he, as Prosecutor General, initiated investigations into corruption in Tusk's entourage.
The Reuters news agency explains that Poland tried to hold Zebro accountable for judicial reforms that the European Union considered to undermine the rule of law. Zebro stated that he would remain abroad until the restoration of the rule of law in Poland.
"Therefore, I decided to stay abroad until genuine guarantees of the rule of law are restored in Poland. I believe that instead of putting up with silence and a stream of lies that I cannot refute, I can do more by fighting the growing lawlessness in Poland," he said.
Zebro's lawyer Bartosz Lewandowski clarified that the grounds for granting asylum were systematic violations of rights and freedoms in Poland, including the cancellation of passports, pressure on judges and statements by government members about possible abductions of opponents.
On January 31, 2025, the Republika TV company reported that Zebro hid right in the studio of the TV channel from the police officers who came to detain him. Half an hour later, he left the studio on his own, was detained in the lobby of the building, and then taken to the investigator for questioning.
At the same time, Republika reported that Zebro was supposed to be taken to a meeting of the Investigative Committee (IC), which is investigating the case of tapping the phones of Polish politicians using the Israeli Pegasus software. However, the police who arrived at his house that day did not find the ex-Prosecutor General.
