Hockey player Hasek called for the United States to be deprived of the World Cup
Two-time Stanley Cup winner and Olympic hockey champion in the Czech national team Dominik Hasek said on January 11 that the International Football Federation (FIFA) should reconsider the decision to hold the World Cup in the United States against the background of Washington's actions in Venezuela.
According to Hasek, what is happening in the United States does not comply with the principles of democracy and the rule of law. He pointed out that a state that, in his assessment, ignores the norms of international law and allows threats of military aggression against other countries should not become a venue for major international sports tournaments.
"This contributes to the legalization of her crimes," he noted on the social network X (ex. Twitter).
Journalist Ben Jacobs reported on December 17 that the FIFA council approved a record amount of financial payments for the participating teams of the 2026 World Cup in the amount of $727 million. At the same time, the main part of $ 655 million will be distributed as prize money, depending on the final place of the team in the tournament.
