On January 12, Danish Ambassador to the United States Jesper Moeller Sørensen commented on a statement by Special envoy for Greenland Jeff Landry, appointed by US President Donald Trump, who claimed that after World War II Denmark allegedly re-"occupied" Greenland, bypassing UN norms.

Sørensen stressed that the historical context is important and recalled the close allied relations between Denmark and the United States. According to him, the kingdom has been a reliable partner of Washington for decades, including after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, responding to the call of the United States. Sorensen noted that Denmark has suffered some of the most significant losses among NATO countries in terms of population.
