Bloomberg urged the United States to agree to Putin's proposal on the START Treaty
American leader Donald Trump should agree to the initiative of Russian President Vladimir Putin to extend for a year the Treaty on Measures for the Further Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms (START Treaty), which expires in February 2026. This opinion was expressed on January 8 by Bloomberg analysts.
"The United States should respond to Putin's initiative by offering to extend the current terms of the agreement for a year. The restoration of inspections will strengthen the confidence of both sides that the other side is indeed fulfilling its obligations," the publication says.
Among the arguments in favor of extending the agreement, analysts pointed to the existing mechanism of bilateral consultations, which take place twice a year, and also stressed that this would restore trust between Moscow and Washington.
Earlier, on January 8, Trump announced that if the START Treaty expires, it will be necessary to conclude a new, "better" agreement. The new nuclear arms agreement also needs to involve "a couple of new players," according to Trump.
In September, Putin announced Russia's readiness to adhere to the START Treaty restrictions for another year after February 5, 2026. He added that the measure would become viable provided that the United States did not take steps that would undermine the balance of deterrence capabilities.
