Colombian President Gustavo Petro intends to discuss with his American counterpart Donald Trump ways to de-escalate in Latin America in order to prevent a "world war." He stated this on January 9 in an interview with the American television channel CBS.

"To stop the world war," Petro replied to a journalist's question about the purpose of the president's visit to the White House.

The politician confirmed that he had been invited to the White House and hoped that continued dialogue with Trump would help stabilize the situation. He noted that in their first conversation, the American president allowed him to speak for 40 out of 55 minutes and agreed that lies were being spread about them both.

Petro stressed that the initiative to discuss Venezuela came from him, not from Trump. In his opinion, the US president believes in the idea of joint governance of this country.

The day before, Trump announced that a meeting with Colombian President Gustavo Petro at the White House is scheduled for early February. He expressed confidence in the success of the upcoming negotiations.

On January 7, the US president announced that he had had a telephone conversation with Petro, in which he explained the drug situation and discussed other differences that had arisen between Washington and Bogota. Trump noted that he appreciated the tone of his Colombian counterpart and said he was looking forward to meeting with him in person in the near future. Petro himself posted a photo on social media the day after the conversation, which depicts the symbols of his country and the United States — a jaguar and an eagle.
