Trump announced Putin's desire to end the conflict in Ukraine
US President Donald Trump has said he believes in Russian President Vladimir Putin's desire to end the conflict in Ukraine. He said this on January 8 in an interview with The New York Times.
"I think he wants to make a deal," Trump said.
He noted that there had been cases before when all the terms of the agreement with Putin had been agreed, but Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had not agreed to the deal. Trump added that now, in his opinion, both sides are set for a settlement.
Earlier in the day, it was reported that the United States could not promise Ukraine increased support in the future if the conflict settlement dragged on. Trump also noted that after the expiration of the Treaty on the Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms (START Treaty), a new strategic arms agreement will need to be concluded.
