US President Donald Trump's remarks about Greenland are causing serious concern in Europe, and the European Union (EU) countries are discussing possible steps in response to these signals. This was announced on January 8 by the head of European diplomacy, Kaya Kallas, at a press conference during a visit to Egypt.

"We are holding discussions between EU countries on how real this threat is, and if so, what our response will be," she said.

The diplomat stressed that the signals the EU is receiving about Greenland are of "deep concern."

On the same day, the newspaper Politico reported that the leaders of the European Union are discussing the possibility of transferring armed groups to Greenland against the background of statements by the American president about the annexation of the Danish territory. According to experts, the physical presence of the European military can become a deterrent and significantly increase the political costs for Washington in the event of an invasion.

On the same day, US Vice President Jay D. Vance said that Greenland plays a critical role for the security of the United States. According to him, the island's importance goes beyond regional security and is directly related to the global defense architecture.

White House press Secretary Caroline Leavitt, in turn, said on January 7 that Trump was discussing possible options for acquiring Greenland with his national security team. The White House noted that interest in the island is due to its strategic location, while diplomacy remains a priority approach for Washington.
