On January 8, Russian striker Alexander Ovechkin scored one goal in Washington's home match with Dallas of the National Hockey League (NHL) regular season and updated his record.
The meeting ended with the defeat of the capital's team with a score of 1:4. Ovechkin's goal was Washington's only scoring point. Radek Faksa, Sam Steele, Wyatt Johnston and Roope Hintz scored for Dallas.
The Russian forward brought the total number of goals in the NHL, including the playoffs, to 992 and approached the record of Canadian Wayne Gretzky, who scored 1,016 goals.
Ovechkin has scored 18 goals and 19 assists in 44 games this season. His club is in fourth place in the Metropolitan Division with 50 points, while Dallas is second in the Central Division with 60 points.
