The Syrian army has declared the Kurdish areas of Aleppo a closed military zone.
The Syrian army has declared the Kurdish areas of Aleppo a closed military zone, blocking them with tanks. This was announced on January 7 by the press service of the Syrian Democratic Forces.
"The government of Damascus has resorted to imposing a suffocating blockade of the Sheikh Maqsoud area, accompanied by intense shelling and encirclement of neighborhoods with tanks, as well as direct threats of a full-scale assault," France24 quoted the statement as saying.
The command of the Syrian army imposed a curfew in the Kurdish neighborhoods of Sheikh Maqsood and Ashrafiya from 15:00 local time (16:00 Moscow time). Damascus, for its part, claims that SDF fighters are attacking residential areas and humanitarian corridors open to civilians leaving the war zone before the start of the curfew.
On January 6, fighting broke out between the Syrian Democratic Forces and the Syrian Army on the outskirts of Aleppo, where the Kurdish population lives. The conflicting sides accused each other of shelling residential areas, resulting in the death of four civilians and 26 injured.
Although a ceasefire was reached by Tuesday evening, fighting resumed on Wednesday. In this regard, the General Directorate of Civil Aviation of Syria suspended the operation of the Aleppo International Airport, as well as the work of government agencies.
On December 24, Russia confirmed its support for Syria's sovereignty after a meeting between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his Syrian counterpart Asaad al-Shibani in Moscow. It was noted that the need to consolidate international and regional efforts to help achieve sustainable stabilization of the situation in Syria was also highlighted.
