A "snow armageddon" is expected in the capital region on January 9, up to 30% of the monthly precipitation rate may fall. This was announced on January 6 by Evgeny Tishkovets, a leading specialist at the Phobos Weather Center.

"Residents of the capital region will face a real snow armageddon," the forecaster said in his Telegram channel.

Tishkovets specified that up to 30 mm of precipitation is expected in the south of the Moscow region and the south of the Central Federal District, which is more than half of the monthly norm. After that, snowdrifts up to half a meter high may form in the capital region, which has never happened this season.

Reduced visibility and icy conditions are forecast on the roads. The weather forecaster recommended to refrain from long-distance trips.

He also warned that more severe frosts are expected in Moscow, and next week the temperature may drop below -20 degrees, and on Epiphany it may cool down to -25 or -30 degrees.

Tishkovets reported in December that by the end of January 2026, snowdrifts in the capital region could grow to 33 cm. He also recalled the temperature norm this month, so, according to the expert, at night the thermometer can show an average of -12.3 degrees, and during the day -6.3 degrees.
