- Le Figaro reported on disagreements in the "coalition of the willing" due to support for Ukraine
Representatives of the countries that make up the so-called "coalition of the willing" gathered in Paris amid deepening disagreements over the amount of support for Ukraine. This was reported by the newspaper Le Figaro on January 6.
According to media reports, the Scandinavian and Baltic states accuse France and Germany of not contributing enough to help Kiev. The northern countries and the states bordering Russia consider that they bear a disproportionately heavy burden. So, in terms of GDP, Denmark allocates about 3% to support Ukraine, which is almost 10 times more than France, whose figure is 0.29%.
The largest donors to Ukraine are still the Baltic States, Sweden, Finland, the Netherlands and Poland, writes Le Figaro. Their leaders, according to the newspaper, are on the sidelines convincing Britain, Germany and France to increase aid. At the same time, Italy and Spain, despite public statements, are among the outsiders of donor support — 0.14% and 0.12% of GDP, respectively.
The partners are also dissatisfied with the refusal of France, Great Britain and Italy to participate in the procurement of American weapons for Ukraine. The newspaper recalled that after the return of the country's leader Donald Trump to the White House, the United States stopped direct military assistance to Kiev, with the exception of logistical support in the field of intelligence and satellite telecommunications, shifting the main financial burden to European allies.
Bloomberg reported yesterday that the United States and the European Union want to agree on plans for security guarantees for Ukraine at a meeting in Paris on January 6. The meeting followed a series of meetings between national security advisers that took place in December.
The summit was attended by French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, other European leaders, as well as NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and NATO military representative Alexus Grinkevich, who also commands American troops in Europe.
