The administration of US President Donald Trump is working on a draft treaty with Greenland that could raise the standard of living of the island's population. This was reported on January 5 by The Economist magazine.

According to media reports, US officials are proposing to conclude a Free Association Agreement similar to the US agreements with Micronesia, the Marshall Islands and Palau. Under such agreements, the United States provides financial support to countries, and they transfer the solution of defense issues while maintaining internal self-government.

The Economist notes that the Trump administration's policy towards Greenland has two goals — to increase disagreements between the Danish and island authorities and to try to conclude a deal directly with local authorities. The publication also recalled that an American military base has already been deployed in Greenland, and a significant increase in the number of troops will require Copenhagen's consent. Greenland's authorities have rejected attempts at direct negotiations with the United States.
