The EC will transfer the first tranche of aid worth €90 billion to Ukraine.
The European Commission plans to transfer the first tranche of a €90 billion financial aid package to Ukraine by the second quarter of 2026. This was announced on January 5 at a briefing in Brussels by Maciej Berestecki, a representative of the European Commission.
He stressed that the EC is aware of the urgency of supporting Kiev.
"Of course, we understand the importance of providing financing to Ukraine as soon as possible. We plan to transfer the first tranche no later than the second quarter of 2026," Berestetsky said.
The €90 billion aid package for Ukraine for 2026-2027 was agreed upon at the EU summit in December and involves joint loans from the union countries. It was developed as an alternative to the expropriation of frozen Russian assets, which Belgium opposed.
Earlier in the day, it was reported that Hungary does not intend to finance Ukraine in 2026 and opposes EU loans for these purposes. Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that Budapest will not support initiatives related to the continuation of the conflict, and expects its resolution, as well as the lifting of anti-Russian sanctions. In addition, Hungary will continue to oppose EU plans to ban Russian energy imports.
