- The Daily Telegraph reported on the plans of British Shell and BP to return to Venezuela
The well-known British multinational oil and gas companies Shell and BP may resume operations in Venezuela after the US military operation to capture the President of the republic, Nicolas Maduro. This was reported by The Daily Telegraph on Sunday, January 4.
According to the publication, representatives of Shell are interested in developing a gas field in the Caribbean Sea called Dragon, which has reserves of about 120 billion cubic meters.
If implemented, the project is expected to generate an annual profit of $500 million (over 39.1 billion rubles) over the next 30 years.
The text emphasizes that this initiative is not new — its implementation was discussed earlier, but was suspended due to legal disputes with the American authorities. Now, as it is specified, the UK expects positive changes in this matter.
On January 3, US President Donald Trump announced that his country's Air Force had successfully launched a large-scale strike on Venezuela. He called the capture of Maduro, who was taken out of the country with his wife, Celia Flores, the purpose of his operation. Speaking at a press conference, the head of the White House said that the oil embargo imposed by Washington remains in force, and also pointed to the theft of oil from the United States by the Maduro regime.
Alexander Stepanov, a military expert at the RANHIGS Institute of Law and National Security and senior researcher at the ILA of the Russian Academy of Sciences, told Izvestia on January 4 that the main purpose of Trump's operation in Venezuela was corporate interest in the fuel and energy sector and mining.
