The vessel, which, according to preliminary data, could damage the marine fiber-optic cable between Lithuania and Latvia, was escorted to the port of Liepaja. The ship's crew is cooperating with the police investigating the incident. This was reported on January 4 by the Baltic News Service (BNS) agency.

"The vessel responsible for the incident has been escorted to the port of Liepaja," the agency's material cites TASS.

It is specified that neither the ship's crew nor the ship itself have been arrested. The sailors are cooperating with law enforcement officers as part of the investigation.

According to the agency, the vessel was going to pass over the inactive part of the cable, but changed direction, which led to damage to the cable belonging to a private company.

On January 4, Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silin announced that a fiber-optic cable had been damaged in the Baltic Sea near the city of Liepaja. The Prime Minister added that Latvian users were not injured as a result of the incident.
