An international team of scientists on an icebreaker from New Zealand went to the Thwaites Glacier in Antarctica, known as the "Doomsday Glacier", to study it. This was reported by The New York Times.

"The expedition's researchers hope to drill through half a mile of glacial ice to install monitors in seawater to collect data in the coming years," the material says.

About 40 specialists will spend about a month at the edge of the glacier. They will scan the ice to obtain accurate data on the rate of destruction.

The Thwaites Glacier with an area of 192 thousand square kilometers is rapidly collapsing due to warm ocean currents. Its complete melting can raise the level of the world's oceans by at least 60 cm. Satellite data showed that water was eroding its base, creating cracks.

A study conducted by the Earth Observation Center at the University of Manitoba with the participation of international experts on December 1, 2025 showed that the Thwaites Glacier in Antarctica is destroying its own structure faster than previously thought. According to the researchers, similar dynamics may occur on other vulnerable Antarctic shelves.
