In Chukotka, a child died as a result of falling under the ice on a snowmobile
A criminal case has been opened in the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug (AO) over the death of a young child who drowned after a snowmobile fell through the ice. This was announced on January 4 by the Investigative Department (SU) of the Investigative Committee (IC) for the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug.
"According to investigators, on January 3, 2026, the suspect, driving a duly unregistered Yamaha snowmobile with a sled attached, left the village of Inchoun in the direction of the village of Lavrentia in the Chukotka region," the Telegram channel said.
According to the department, there was a 39-year-old woman and a minor in the sleigh. While driving on the ice cover of the Gulf of Lawrence, about 10 m from the coastline, a snowmobile with a sled fell through the ice.
As a result of falling into the icy water and due to hypothermia, the child died. The woman was rescued and taken to a medical facility.
A criminal case has been opened against a 28-year-old man under Part 1 of Article 109 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Causing death by negligence"). Investigators are establishing all the circumstances and causes of the incident.
On December 28, 2025, the Moscow Region Prosecutor's Office announced that two men had rescued children who had fallen through the ice in Balashikha. The first passerby, Arthur, pushed the younger boy onto the ice when he had already stopped breathing, and at the same time helped the elder to stay afloat. Later, another passerby, Alexei, came up and helped everyone else out onto the ice and gave first aid to the youngest.
