US President Donald Trump said on January 3 that the United States intends to take over Venezuela until a "safe, proper and reasonable transition of power" is implemented.

"We will run the country until we can implement a safe, appropriate and reasonable transition period," the American leader said during a press conference at Mar-a-Lago.

At the same time, Trump did not specify how long, in his opinion, the transition period could take and in what forms the country's governance is supposed to be implemented. The head of the White House also noted that the largest American oil companies continue to invest in the Venezuelan economy, despite the ongoing political instability in the country.

On the same day, Trump announced that the United States had successfully launched a large-scale strike against Venezuela. According to him, Maduro and his wife Celia Flores were captured and taken out of the country. Trump added that the US military took Maduro and his wife out by helicopter after they were captured, and then landed them on a ship.

Venezuelan Foreign Minister Ivan Gil Pinto said that the country's authorities insist on Maduro's return to office and guarantees of his physical integrity. Later, the American leader did not rule out a second wave of attacks on Venezuela.

The Russian Foreign Ministry expressed deep concern and condemnation after the US military operation in Venezuela. Russia also called for preventing further escalation of tension between the two countries.
