The United States originally planned to strike Venezuela on Christmas Day. This was reported on January 3 by the CBS News channel.

According to the TV channel, the American leader Donald Trump approved the operation against Venezuela a few days before it began.

"Military officials discussed the possibility of conducting a mission on Christmas Day," the publication says.

It is noted that the US military would have had more opportunities to strike after Christmas, but the operation was postponed due to weather conditions. The U.S. military needed favorable weather conditions to "successfully accomplish" its goals, the channel added.

On the same day, the American leader said that the United States had successfully launched a large-scale strike against Venezuela. According to him, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his family have been captured and taken out of the country. Trump added that the operation was conducted with the participation of American law enforcement agencies.

The Venezuelan authorities have declared a state of emergency in the country due to the American strikes. In turn, Colombian President Gustavo Petro called for an urgent meeting of the United Nations and the Organization of American States.
