Mexican president interrupts meeting with reporters due to earthquake

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum was forced to interrupt her daily press conference after the earthquake warning system in the state of Guerrero went off at the National Palace. This was reported on January 2 by the Associated Press (AP).

It is specified that the press conference was resumed later. Sheinbaum said she had contacted the Governor of the state of Guerrero, Evelyn Salgado, who informed her that there was no serious damage at the moment.

According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center, an earthquake of magnitude 6.5 occurred in the southwestern Mexican state of Guerrero. It is specified that the seismic event was recorded at 7:58 a.m. local time. The source of the tremors lay at a depth of about 35 km.

An earthquake of magnitude 5.3 was recorded in the US state of California on December 31. It was clarified that the tremors occurred at 8:49 Moscow time, 14 km from the city of Susanville. The earthquake was centered at a depth of 4.7 km.
