Weight gain in middle age is an unpleasant side effect of aging. With age, it becomes more difficult to do anything about body weight control. This was reported by Medical Xpress magazine.

"With age, metabolism tends to slow down, but appetite and food intake remain unchanged," said Rafael de Cabo, an expert on aging at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

According to him, with age there is a constant increase in weight. The consequences of this go far beyond the need to change your wardrobe. As we age, the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and neurodegenerative diseases increases, and being overweight increases this risk.

Understanding some biological processes can help to understand the pattern. Most of the weight gained is adipose tissue, which begins to change. By the middle of life, less fat remains under the skin, and more remains around the internal organs, replacing muscle mass. At the same time, it is noted that with sedentary work or an inactive lifestyle, muscle loss and fat gain occur faster.

De Cabo stressed that maintaining an active lifestyle is a key point in this context. He called for daily walks or visits to the gym. In the case of office work, the specialist recommended installing a standing desk and spending several hours a day standing.

In addition, he suggested intermittent fasting as one of the methods, since it alternates meals with long breaks without food. In particular, de Cabo noted that it is necessary to limit meals to an eight-hour interval. This method, as specified, works on mice in his laboratory and demonstrates that such rodents live longer and remain healthy if they take long breaks between meals.

In the context of combating weight gain in middle age, the NIH also recommends maintaining a healthy diet by including fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, eggs, seafood, lean meat, legumes, nuts and seeds in the diet), drinking plenty of water, giving up bad habits, exercising, and maintaining a stable and full sleep regime. and also visit the hospital regularly for medical checkups.

On December 16, nutritionist and nutritionist Sofya Kovanova talked about ways to lose weight quickly after the New Year holidays. She called for a return to the usual diet as soon as possible after the feast. According to the expert, it will be easier to restore the original weight. In addition, Kovanova stressed that one day of overeating can require about three days of active recovery, and several holidays can stretch the process for a week or more.
