- South Korean Prosecutor's office has requested 10 years in prison for ex-president Yoon Seok-young
The South Korean prosecutor's office has filed a 10-year prison sentence for former President Yoon Seok-young, who was ousted from office after a failed coup attempt. This was reported by the Yonhap news agency on December 26.
The former president is accused of obstructing the activities of government authorities, violating the rights of government members, preparing martial law and spreading false information in order to justify its introduction, as well as attempting to destroy evidence.
"The criminal actions of the defendant seriously undermined law and order in the Republic of Korea and dealt a big blow to the people who trusted him and elected him president," said the representative of the prosecutor's office.
Yoon Seok-young was arrested on January 15 in a corruption case, which was an "unprecedented" case in which investigative authorities detained a person who ruled the state. Later, on January 18, the president was taken into custody, which caused discontent among his supporters, who staged pogroms in the country. On July 15, it became known that Yoon Seok-yeol was arrested again, as the court also feared that he might destroy evidence.
Yonhap news agency reported on August 17 that about 11,000 South Koreans filed lawsuits demanding monetary compensation from Yoon Seok-young and his wife Kim Gong-hee for attempting to impose martial law last December. According to the lawsuits, Yoon Seok—yeol's imposition of martial law in December 2024 is a deliberate crime against human rights.
