China unveils giant snowman ahead of tourist season
An updated giant snowman has been unveiled in the Chinese city of Harbin, one of the key symbols of the winter tourist season in the northeastern part of the country. The 19-meter-high figure was created from more than 3.5 thousand cubic meters of snow and became part of the preparation of the city for the peak influx of tourists. The snowman is 19 m high, 14 m long, and 11 m wide. The figure was carved from more than 3.5 thousand cubic meters of artificial snow. To create a smooth and dense texture, the builders used snow cannons, abandoning the expectation of natural precipitation. Tourists began to actively visit the site immediately after the opening, taking photos of the traditional red scarf and rounded face of the snowman.
The project involved 64 sculptors and more than 100 construction workers, who completed the work in 11 days. The initiative, which began in 2019 as an unofficial project of municipal workers, has gained wide popularity in Chinese social networks over time and has become an annual tourist symbol of Harbin.
The city, which is often called the "ice capital" of China, remains one of the centers of the national winter tourism industry. Other large winter facilities will also open in the city in the coming days, including an exhibition of snow sculptures on the island of the Sun with an area of 1.5 million square meters. ice and snow carnival on the frozen Sungari River.
