Scientists have identified iron deficiency without anemia in atopic dermatitis
Iron deficiency without anemia is widespread among adult patients with moderate to severe atopic dermatitis. Polish researchers came to this conclusion based on the results of a clinical analysis. This was reported on December 23 in the journal Medical Xpress.
The study sample included 86 adult patients with moderate to severe atopic dermatitis. Participants were assessed for iron metabolism, inflammatory activity, and clinical scales of disease severity. The results showed that almost half of the patients showed signs of iron deficiency, despite maintaining normal hemoglobin levels. Low transferrin saturation was detected in 45% of the participants, decreased ferritin in 37%, and decreased serum iron in 26% of the patients.
In patients with a pronounced inflammatory response, determined by an increased level of highly sensitive C-reactive protein, the most unfavorable profile was observed: lower values of iron and transferrin saturation with a simultaneous increase in the level of the soluble transferrin receptor.
In a multifactorial analysis, a decrease in serum iron remained associated with the worst indicators of the quality of life index in dermatological diseases. The increased transferrin level, in turn, correlated with a greater severity of the skin process according to the EASI and SCORAD scales.
The authors note that disorders in the regulation of iron metabolism may be a systemic feature of atopic dermatitis and a potential target for therapy. In their opinion, further research should assess whether targeted iron deficiency correction can improve clinical outcomes in patients.
On November 30, cosmetologist Anastasia Shibaeva and experts from the Golden Apple told Izvestia about skin hydration during the heated season. According to experts, dryness worsens the appearance of fine wrinkles and exacerbates chronic dermatoses, including eczema, atopic dermatitis and acne. It was clarified that basic home care with gentle cleansing without aggressive surfactants should be established for care. The experts named foams and cream gels as preferred.
