- Brazil has learned about the effectiveness of a traditional plant in the fight against arthritis
A group of Brazilian researchers has confirmed the effectiveness of the traditional Alternanthera littoralis plant, known as "Joseph's Coat," in combating inflammation and arthritis. This was reported by Science Daily magazine on December 22.
The plant grows along the coast of Brazil. It has long been used in folk medicine to treat inflammation, infections, and parasitic diseases. However, until recently, there was insufficient scientific evidence for its effectiveness and safety. Research has shown that the extract from this plant has a strong anti-inflammatory effect and can be effective in arthritis.
The study began with a chemical analysis of the plant conducted by Marcos Salvador, a pharmacist from the Institute of Biology at Campinas State University. He discovered the active substances in an ethanol extract obtained from the aboveground parts of the plant.
Next, the experts evaluated how the extract itself affects inflammation in models of arthritis. Toxicological tests were also conducted to assess the safety of the drug. The results showed that the plant extract significantly reduces inflammation in the laboratory.
"In experimental models, we observed a decrease in edema, an improvement in joint parameters, and a modulation of inflammatory mediators, which indicates an antioxidant and tissue—protective effect," said Ariel Cristina Arena, associate professor of Structural and Functional Biology at the Institute of Biosciences at the Botucatu campus of the State University of Sao Paulo.
According to the results, the "Joseph Coat" not only reduces swelling, but also supposedly can help protect joint tissues and limit damage associated with inflammatory diseases, including arthritis.
At the same time, the scientists emphasized that the extract is not ready for clinical use without additional toxicological tests and clinical studies in humans. These studies, as specified, will help to confirm the effectiveness and safety of the plant for medicinal use in the future.
The South China Morning Post (SCMP) newspaper reported on the benefits of wormwood in Chinese and Japanese medicine on December 9. It was noted that the plant has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and is characterized by a spicy aroma reminiscent of sage. According to Dr. Samuel To, a Hong Kong specialist in traditional Chinese medicine, the warming effect of wormwood also helps to improve circulation and mild pain relief.
