On December 20, the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its commitment to the fight against the Islamic State terrorist organization (IS, ISIL, the organization is recognized as terrorist and banned in the Russian Federation) and called on the United States and the international coalition to support anti-terrorist efforts without harming the civilian population.

"The Syrian Arab Republic reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the fight against ISIS. <...> Calls on the United States and the member states of the international coalition to join in supporting the republic's efforts to combat terrorism, thereby contributing to the protection of civilians and the restoration of security and stability in the region," reads a message on X (formerly Twitter).

The New York Times (NYT) newspaper reported on the same day that US military personnel began striking targets of the Islamic State terrorist organization in Syria. Later, Pentagon Chief Pete Hegseth announced the launch of an anti-terrorist operation in response to the recent attack on the US military in Palmyra.

On December 13, Syria TV reported that an attack on American and Syrian soldiers had taken place in Palmyra. After the attack, wounded American soldiers were evacuated by helicopters to the US military base Al-Tanf, located in southern Syria. Later, the Pentagon announced that two US Army soldiers and one civilian translator were killed during the operation against the Islamic State group.

On the same day, US President Donald Trump promised to take retaliatory actions against ISIS after the deaths of American servicemen. Later, two F-16 fighter jets were lifted into the air over Palmyra.
