Lavrov pointed to the threat of Western interference in the State Duma elections.
There is a threat of interference by Western countries during the elections to the State Duma in 2026. This was announced on December 18 by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov during a meeting of the United Russia Party General Council Commission on International Cooperation.
Lavrov stressed that Russia continues to be the focus of attention of Western geopolitical "engineers" who actively use various electoral technologies.
He noted that during the presidential elections of the Russian Federation in March 2024, an unprecedented number of attempts to interfere using sophisticated methods and forms were recorded.
"All of the above will affect the upcoming elections to the State Duma of the Russian Federation in the fall of 2026. We should have no illusions, so we must be ready for this, and, of course, we will be ready," he is quoted as saying on the Foreign Ministry's website.
Lavrov added that the Russian Foreign Ministry actively opposes interference in the internal affairs of the country.
Vasily Piskarev, deputy of the State Duma, chairman of the Committee on Security and Anti-Corruption, said on November 6 that the West was developing new plans to interfere in the 2026 State Duma elections. The MP noted that various methods are being actively developed as part of the campaign to discredit future candidates.
