Eating high-fat cheese and cream may be associated with a lower risk of dementia. At the same time, scientists emphasize that we are talking only about a statistical relationship, and not about direct evidence of a protective effect. This was reported on December 17 in the journal Medical Xpress.

High-fat cheeses contain more than 20% fat and include varieties such as cheddar, brie and gouda. Cream with a high fat content of 30-40% includes whipped cream and double cream.

"Our study shows that some high-fat dairy products may reduce the risk of dementia, which calls into question established beliefs about the effects of fats on brain health," said Emily Sonestedt, professor at Lund University.

The researchers analyzed data from 27,670 Swedes with an average age of 58 years, who were followed for 25 years. During the study, 3,208 participants developed dementia. People recorded their food intake and discussed cooking methods with researchers.

The comparison showed that those who ate 50 grams or more of high-fat cheese daily had a 13% lower risk of developing dementia compared with those who consumed less than 15 grams. For vascular dementia, the risk reduction reached 29%. People without the APOE e4 genetic variant also had a lower risk of Alzheimer's disease.

Similar data was obtained for high-fat cream: consumption of 20 grams or more daily was associated with a 16% reduction in the risk of dementia. The study found no association between dementia risk and consumption of low-fat cheese, low-fat cream, milk, butter, or fermented dairy products, including yogurt, kefir, and buttermilk.

Nutritionist and nutritionist Sofya Kovanova advised on December 15 to eat two to three hours before the feast, so as not to overeat. According to her, it's better to start with a vegetable salad with butter and lemon juice, after which you can gradually try the rest of the dishes.
