- Vucic ruled out Serbia's participation in a possible conflict between Europe and Russia
Serbia will maintain its independent position in a possible conflict between Europe and Russia. This was announced on December 17 by the country's President Alexander Vucic.
He noted that the world is on the verge of a major conflict, and Serbia's main goal is to preserve peace and develop its economy. Vucic recalled that during the First World War, the republic lost almost 29% of its population.
"We will not fight, we will strengthen the army, we are buying a lot of systems so that people feel calm, so that they know that we have very strong deterrence factors and that those who try to do something know that it is impossible because their losses would be unjustified," he said. on the air of RTS.
The day before, former Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vulin said that the European Union (EU) was preparing for war with Russia and was trying to use Serbia for this purpose, pushing it to choose a side in the conflict. He made the corresponding statement in response to the call of the European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, that it was "time for Serbia to choose a side."
The Euractiv portal reported on December 15 that seven EU states do not support the idea of confiscating Russian assets under sanctions. Russian President Vladimir Putin said on November 27 that the confiscation of Russian assets located in the European Union would have negative consequences. He also instructed the Russian government to develop a package of retaliatory measures.
