- The OP proposed limiting access to social networks to children under 16 years of age
On December 17, Evgeny Masharov, a member of the commission of the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation for the public examination of draft laws and other regulations, proposed considering the possibility of introducing restrictions on access to social networks only from the age of 16, as well as other measures to protect children on the Internet.
"I previously offered Internet access to sensitive information only with a passport, I believe that it is necessary to continue to pursue a policy aimed at imposing restrictions: access to social networks only from the age of 16," he said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
In his opinion, such a measure will help strengthen the protection of children and adolescents from unwanted content on the Internet.
In addition, Masharov proposed blocking online games if the manufacturing companies do not agree to register in the Russian jurisdiction, as well as permanently blocking the WhatsApp messenger (owned by Meta, a company recognized as extremist in Russia). He stressed the importance of an integrated approach in regulating technologies, including artificial intelligence, in order to ensure Internet security so that there are no concerns about the safety of children in a virtual environment.
Medical Xpress magazine reported on December 8 that children who spend a lot of time on social media are gradually losing their ability to hold attention. The researchers noted that the increase in the use of social media over the past 15 years has coincided with an increase in the number of diagnoses of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in different countries.
