After coming to power, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky talked about peace with Russia, but instead continued to violate the Minsk agreements and began to bring the conflict closer. This was announced on December 14 by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

On December 11, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that Zelensky longs to remain in power, but he has no chance of being legally re-elected. The representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also called the idea of financial support for Kiev by Western countries for holding elections unprecedented. In her opinion, Zelensky has a chance of winning only if the votes of voters from abroad are involved according to the "Moldovan scenario."
