On December 13, US President Donald Trump threatened Thailand and Cambodia with the imposition of duties if the countries do not stop fighting.

"I just used the duties 10 minutes ago to resolve a new escalation between Thailand and Cambodia. I said, "If you fight, I will not only cancel our trade deal, but I will also impose tariffs on your countries," Trump said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal.

The American leader explained that he made this statement during a telephone conversation with the leaders of the two states. He also noted that he considers the imposition of duties to be an effective measure, and expressed concern that the U.S. Supreme Court may declare some of these measures illegal, calling such a prospect "terrible."

On December 8, the Cambodian military opened fire on the Thai Anupong base, killing one soldier and injuring two others. The Thai army has called on residents of border areas to evacuate to shelters due to the threat of escalation of the conflict. The next day, fighting between Thailand and Cambodia unfolded along the entire joint border, affecting five regions and hundreds of citizens on both sides. It was emphasized that the disputed territories along the 817-kilometer border have repeatedly become a source of conflict.

On December 12, the American leader announced that Thailand and Cambodia had agreed to a cease-fire and respect for an earlier peace agreement. He stressed that both countries are committed to a peaceful settlement and are interested in continuing trade and economic ties with the United States. On December 13, Trump announced that he had succeeded in ending the escalation between Thailand and Cambodia. He added that Washington had done a "good job" with the two countries.

Later, Thai Prime Minister Anuthin Chanvirakun said that the country would continue fighting on the border with Cambodia and would not stop the conflict.
