Two US Army soldiers and one civilian translator were killed in Syria in Palmyra during an operation against the Islamic State (IS, an organization recognized as a terrorist organization and banned in the Russian Federation. The Pentagon announced this on December 13.

"Two US Army soldiers and one civilian translator were killed and three wounded. The attack occurred when the soldiers were holding a meeting with key leaders. Their mission was to support the ongoing operations against ISIS (IS, an organization recognized as a terrorist organization and banned in the Russian Federation. — Ed.) and terrorism in the region," reads a message on the Facebook page (owned by Meta, recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation).

According to the Ministry, an investigation is currently underway into the circumstances of the attack. The names of the victims and information about their units will be released 24 hours after notification of the next of kin.

The attack on American and Syrian soldiers in Palmyra was reported by Syria TV on the same day. After the attack, wounded American soldiers were evacuated by helicopters to the US military base Al-Tanf, located in southern Syria.
