- Orban pointed to a departure from the principle of unanimity when discussing Russia's assets in Europe.
Hungary is protesting against the departure from unanimity in the European Union (EU) in connection with the situation of frozen Russian assets. This was announced on December 12 by Prime Minister Viktor Orban .
"Today, the people of Brussels are crossing the Rubicon. A written vote will be held at noon, which will cause irreparable damage to the EU. The subject of discussion will be frozen Russian assets," he wrote on Facebook (owned by Meta, a company whose activities are recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation).
According to him, this procedure actually cancels the requirement of unanimity, which, according to the Hungarian Prime Minister, is illegal. Orban also stressed that the European Commission, instead of monitoring compliance with EU treaties, systematically violates European law.
"Hungary is protesting against this decision and will do everything to restore the legal situation," the Hungarian prime minister concluded.
Bloomberg reported on December 3 that the Belgian authorities rejected a new legal proposal from the European Union to use frozen Russian assets to secure a loan to Ukraine. It was clarified that Brussels fears legal consequences for the country, as most of the funds are deposited in the Euroclear depository, which is based in the capital.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said on November 27 that the confiscation of Russian assets located in the European Union would have negative consequences. In particular, the Russian government, on behalf of the head of state, is developing a package of retaliatory measures.
