Peskov: Putin and Trump have long talked about the need to hold elections in Ukraine
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Russian President Vladimir Putin had long expressed his position on the need for presidential elections in Ukraine. He announced this on December 10, commenting on the current situation.
"This is what Putin has been talking about for a long time. This is what the President [of the United States Donald] was talking about recently Trump. Let's see how events will develop in this direction," Peskov said at a briefing.
He also noted that Moscow is working to ensure peace in Ukraine, not just a truce. As for the statement by Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky that he is ready to hold elections in the country, the Kremlin has not yet had time to discuss it, as it is quite new, the press secretary of the head of state said.
On December 9, Zelensky announced his readiness to hold presidential elections. That's how he commented on Trump's statement. In an interview with Politico, he said that the time had come for the presidential elections in Ukraine. According to the US president, the Ukrainian authorities are using the pretext of the ongoing conflict in the country in order to postpone the presidential elections.
On November 27, Putin said that Russia wants to reach an agreement with Ukraine, but now it is legally impossible, and the main thing is that the decisions should be internationally recognized. The Russian President explained that the Ukrainian government had made a strategic mistake by refusing to hold presidential elections and losing legitimacy.
