- Degtyarev announced the possible deprivation of Poland's right to international competitions
Poland and a number of other Eastern European countries may lose the right to hold international sports competitions due to the non-admission of Russian athletes. This was announced on December 10 by the Minister of Sports of the Russian Federation Mikhail Degtyarev.
"The President of the IOC (International Olympic Committee. Kirsty Coventry and her team publicly and non-publicly make it clear to all countries that restrict entry to athletes that they will answer for this by simply not having any more international competitions. First of all, this, of course, concerns Poles, Czechs, and a number of other Eastern European countries," he said in an interview with TASS.
According to Degtyarev, the IOC and international sports federations support Russia in this matter and are ready to impose sanctions on countries that violate the principles of sports equality. The minister added that even some Western European countries show greater loyalty than their eastern neighbors, whose policies may lead to fewer major sporting events in Europe.
The head of the Ministry of Sports also reported on the discussion of possible sanctions against countries pursuing anti-Russian policies.
Degtyarev said on December 2 that the IOC supports the return of Russian athletes to international competitions. The minister noted that now the federation is obliged to allow Russians to participate in international startups.
