- Scientists talked about the biological discrepancy between humans and the modern world
Modern industrial conditions create a load to which human biology is not adapted, which leads to chronic stress and an increase in inflammatory diseases. This was reported on December 8 in the journal Science Daily.
Anthropologists Colin Shaw and Daniel Longman have noted that the industrial world has developed much faster than human physiology can adapt. For hundreds of thousands of years, humans have evolved in a hunter-gatherer lifestyle, with high mobility, short bursts of stress, and constant contact with nature.
Industrialization has radically changed these parameters over several centuries. Noise, air and light pollution, microplastics, pesticides, artificial lighting, prolonged sitting and constant sensory flow — all this forms a chronic burden on the body's stress systems.
Modern stimuli — from traffic to work conflicts — activate the same physiological mechanisms that once helped to survive. But, unlike a predator, such stressors do not disappear. A separate block of analysis is devoted to how industrialization affects human evolutionary fitness. It's not just about health, but also about reproduction. The continued decline in global fertility and the rise in inflammatory and autoimmune diseases are seen as a marker that the environment is systematically overloading biology.
The scientists emphasized that biological adaptation occurs extremely slowly — on the horizon of tens of thousands of years. Therefore, the discrepancy between human physiology and the industrial environment cannot be corrected naturally. The way out, according to anthropologists, is in cultural and environmental changes. It is about creating an urban environment that takes into account the physiological needs of humans, reducing harmful effects and strengthening the connection with nature.
Psychologist Ekaterina Yemelyanova told Izvestia on December 4 that modern people are increasingly faced with a condition where they do not have the strength and cannot force themselves to work. According to her, in this case, laziness can be a way to resolve an internal dispute: one part of the personality longs for realization and recognition, the other is afraid not to endure potential failure.
