The statement by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz that Russian President Vladimir Putin allegedly intends to restore the USSR is absolutely untrue. This was announced on December 9 by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

Peskov stressed that Putin "does not want to restore the USSR, because it is impossible," and he himself said this.

"To talk about this is not to show respect to our allies, to our CIS partners, and to more advanced forms of integration. Apparently, Mr. Merz does not know about this," the press secretary of the head of state said at a briefing.

The allegations about the preparation of an attack on NATO are also "complete nonsense," Peskov added.

On December 4, the Russian leader announced that the restoration of the USSR was impossible and pointless. According to him, those who spread statements in the West about the alleged dreams of the Russian Federation to return the USSR are trying to scare their population in this way.

On October 10, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko noted that it was impossible to restore the USSR, but the economic space must be preserved. In his opinion, it is necessary to increase the margin of strength of the economies of the CIS countries and focus on joint activities within the framework of the common market, while not returning to the Soviet Union.
