The International Court of Justice of the United Nations (UN) has accepted Russia's counterclaims against Ukraine in the case of the genocide in Donbass and set a deadline of one year for Kiev to respond. This is stated in the court's decision of December 8.

"The court allowed Ukraine to submit an objection, and the Russian Federation to respond to the objection. The court set December 7, 2026 and December 7, 2027 as the appropriate dates for the submission of these written pleadings," the document says.

The UN Court also recognized Russia's claims as acceptable, since they are directly related to the subject of the dispute.

Earlier in the day, the Russian Prosecutor General's Office (GP) approved an indictment against the top political and military leadership of Ukraine in the criminal case of genocide on the territory of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR).

A total of 41 people are being tried in the genocide case in Donbass. Among the accused are the former and current commanders—in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) Valery Zaluzhny and Alexander Syrsky, former President Petro Poroshenko (listed on the register of extremists and terrorists in the Russian Federation), Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine (NSDC) Rustem Umerov, head of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry Denis Shmygal, former Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk and the recently dismissed head of the office of the President of Ukraine Andriy Ermak.
