- The United States noted the EU's purchases of Russian gas in excess of assistance to Ukraine
On December 6, US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau said that from 2022 to 2024, European countries spent more on buying Russian gas than on helping Ukraine.
"Did you know that the nations of Europe actually sent significantly more money to Russia (to pay for energy supplies. — Ed.) from 2022 to 2024, what did they give Ukraine?"— wrote Landau.
This is how he responded to a comment by military analyst Jimmy Rushton, who asked Landau to share a "long and grumpy" account of his visit to Brussels.
Earlier, on December 3, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted that the EU could lose its leading potential in the economy due to the abandonment of Russian gas and would depend on energy sources that cost more.
Prior to that, on November 17, Tino Fragalla, co-chairman of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, said that Germany needed to return to using Russian gas and repair the Nord Stream gas pipelines. In addition, the AfG co-chairman pointed out that Germany currently has the most expensive electricity in Europe, which is why many entrepreneurs refuse to locate production facilities in the country.
