Albert Yelakaev, a member of the terrorist gang Shamil Basaev, a resident of the Stavropol Territory, was sentenced to nine years in prison for attacking Russian soldiers in Dagestan in 1999. This was announced on December 3 by the FSB's Public Relations Center.
"The Southern District Military Court found A.Yelakaev guilty and sentenced him to nine years in prison to serve his sentence in a high—security penal colony," the statement said.
Yelakaev was found guilty of banditry, active participation in an armed rebellion and encroachment on the lives of military personnel. According to investigators, in July 1999, he voluntarily joined a gang led by terrorists Shamil Basayev and Emir Khattab. In August of the same year, as part of a group of at least 1,000 people, he participated in an attack on the Botlikhsky district of Dagestan, which killed 33 Russian soldiers and injured 34 people.
Yelakaev was detained in September 2021, after which the Investigative Committee (IC) of Russia, together with the FSB, formed an evidence base for his involvement in crimes.
On October 17, the FSB Central Control Center reported that Islam Batsiev, a former member of the Basayev and Khattab gang, was sentenced to 21 years in a penal colony after the attack on the 76th Pskov Airborne Division in Chechnya in 2000. The FSB continues to search for all members of the Basayev and Khattab gangs who participated in the attack on Pskov paratroopers in February 2000 in the vicinity of the village of Ulus-Kert in the Shatoi district of the Chechen Republic. Then, as a result of the battle, 84 soldiers were killed.
In December 2024, defendants in criminal cases were detained about armed attacks by members of Basayev's and Khattab's detachments on Russian military personnel in Chechnya in 1999 and 2000. Hamidula Yapov and Minkail Magamadov were detained as part of the criminal cases. They were charged under Article 279 of the Criminal Code ("Organization of an armed rebellion or active participation in it"), Part 2 of Article 209 of the Criminal Code ("Participation in a gang"), Article 317 of the Criminal Code ("Assault on the life of a law enforcement officer").
Shamil Basayev is a terrorist, one of the leaders of the Chechen separatist movement. Participated in military operations in Abkhazia (1992-1993) and Chechnya (1994-1996). He organized a terrorist attack in Budennovsk, was eliminated by security forces in 2006 during a special operation in Ingushetia.
