Scientists talked about the effects of tea and coffee on bone health in the elderly
Australian researchers have studied the effects of coffee and tea on bone health in the elderly for 10 years. They found that regular tea consumption is associated with higher bone density, whereas excessive coffee consumption may decrease it. This was reported by the authors of a paper published in the Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI) journal.
Osteoporosis and decreased bone density remain a serious problem for the elderly: with age, the risk of fractures increases, and the consequences often lead to limited mobility and a deterioration in the quality of life. Diet and habits, including coffee and tea consumption, can affect bone health, but previous research results have been contradictory.
Australian scientists observed almost 10,000 elderly people, measuring their bone density and tracking coffee and tea consumption for 10 years. They took into account age, weight, smoking, physical activity, alcohol consumption, medications, and other factors.
The study showed that regular tea consumption is associated with higher bone density in the hip area, while coffee in moderation has no significant effect. However, drinking more than five cups of coffee a day can be harmful to bones. The interaction with other factors such as alcohol and weight is also important: in people with high alcohol consumption, coffee can negatively affect bones, and tea is especially beneficial for those who are overweight.
Although the difference in performance is small, at the population level it can reduce the risk of fractures and improve bone health in old age. These results show that moderate coffee consumption is safe, and tea can be an additional support for bone strengthening.
The Sohu media portal reported on November 18 that milk is often associated with strengthening bones and an additional source of calcium. However, studies have shown that not all organisms perceive it in the same way, and for some people, drinking milk can cause problems.
