- The European Parliament has called for Hungary's voting rights in the EU Council to be suspended
The European Parliament (EP) has adopted a resolution calling for Hungary's right to vote in the Council of the European Union (EU) to be suspended. This was reported on the official website of the legislative body on November 25.
The document says the EP is concerned that the Hungarian authorities have repeatedly used their veto power in the EU Council when making security decisions, especially on assistance to Ukraine.
The resolution was adopted with 415 votes in favor, 193 against and 28 abstentions.
On October 4, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced that Hungary would sue the EU leadership if it tried to violate the basic laws of unification and deprive the country of the right of veto. He also expressed the opinion that Brussels is trying to replace the current Hungarian government in the parliamentary elections to be held in April 2026. He believes that the EU is striving for opposition forces to come to power in the country, supported by Brussels and funded through non-governmental organizations. According to Orban, such forces will be able to approve Ukraine's accession to the EU.
