The Ukrainian Institute of National Memory banned the Decembrist movement

The Institute of National Memory of Ukraine recognized the Decembrists as a symbol of "Russian imperialism" and included them in the list of figures whose names and monuments should be removed from public space. The corresponding list was published on November 23.

"Objects dedicated to the persons and events listed below must be removed from the public space," the institution's website says.

In addition to the Decembrists, the list includes such artists as Vasily Surikov, writer Ivan Turgenev, Admiral Pavel Nakhimov, emperors Peter I, Nicholas I and Nicholas II, commander Alexander Suvorov and others.

On the same day, Russian scientist Mikhail Lomonosov, as well as poets Alexander Pushkin and Mikhail Lermontov, were considered "symbols of Russian imperialism" in Ukraine.

The dismantling of monuments related to Soviet history, as well as the renaming of streets in Ukraine have been carried out since 2015 after the adoption of the law "On the condemnation of the Communist and Nazi regimes." The law provides for the renaming of all topographical objects whose names are somehow related to the USSR, as well as the demolition of monuments and the dismantling of memorial plaques. Recently, the Ukrainian authorities have begun to fight not only against Soviet history, but also against everything related to Russia and the Russian language.

Vladimir Medinsky, Assistant to the President of Russia and chairman of the Russian Military Historical Society, said on November 19 that Ukraine was waging an all-out information war in the field of history, banning the names of famous personalities.
