Finnish Defense Minister Antti Hyakkanen announced the need to review the rules for buying apartments by Russian citizens in the country. This was announced on November 24 by the Finnish television company Yle.

"Hundreds of thousands of transactions are made in housing companies every year. We are talking about a volume of a completely different scale than when controlling real estate transactions," the publication quotes Hyakkanen as saying.

He believes that the purchase of real estate by Russians in Finland allegedly poses a security threat.

According to Yle, thousands of apartments in Finland are for sale on Russian websites. Russian citizens continue to actively buy real estate in the capital, and among the buyers there are allegedly people with low or zero incomes who purchase dozens of apartments. The current law prohibits Russians from buying real estate, but does not apply to apartments purchased through the purchase of shares in housing companies.

The Minister acknowledged that monitoring apartment transactions would be difficult to put into practice. At the same time, Member of Parliament Suna Kyumyalyainen called the current situation a serious flaw in the legislation.

On November 23, organizers from the Alexander Society of Finland announced that activists in the country are organizing a series of car rallies to checkpoints on the border with Russia in protest against its closure. The event is timed to coincide with the two-year anniversary of the closure of the border. On December 14, protesters will sound horns at all major checkpoints, including Vaalimaa, Nuiyamaa, Imatra, Niirala, Vartius and Kuusamo, demanding the opening of the border.
