Russian chess players win the World Team Championship in Spain
Russian athletes beat the Azerbaijani team in the final of the World Team Chess Championship held in Spain. The final match on November 23 consisted of two matches, both ended in favor of our athletes.
In the first meeting, the Russians won with a score of 3:1. Alexandra Goryachkina and Polina Shuvalova scored the winning points for the team, and the games of Ekaterina Lagno and Leia Garifullina ended in a draw, Sport-Express notes. In the second match, the final score was 2.5:1.5 — Garifullina brought the decisive point to the team. The remaining games ended in a draw again.
This is the third title for the Russian team at the World Team Championship. Earlier victories were won in 2017 and 2021. Ekaterina Lagno, who became the world champion and was a member of the national team of Ukraine in 2013, performed in all successful tournaments.
Goryachkina won the tournament for the third time, Shuvalova — for the second time. The team also included Anna Shukhman, who, like Garifullina, won gold in the World Team Championship for the first time.
The day before, it was reported that Russian chess players defeated the Chinese national team in the second match of the semi-finals of the World Team Chess Championship in Linares (Spain). The second match ended with a score of 2.5:1.5 in favor of the Russians.
On November 5, Russian grandmaster Yan Nepomnyashchy lost to Indian Deeptayan Ghosh in the second round and failed to reach the third round of the World Chess Cup. The match ended with a score of 0.5:1.5.
