The pancreas performs key functions on a daily basis, from producing insulin to helping with digestion. However, a number of common habits can imperceptibly destroy this organ and lead to inflammation, diabetes, and even cancer. This was reported on November 20 in the journal Medical Xpress.

The pancreas is a small organ behind the stomach that produces digestive enzymes and hormones that control blood sugar levels. But even routine lifestyle decisions can gradually weaken it. Experts warn that damage to this organ often leads to inflammation, metabolic disorders, and an increased risk of cancer.

Alcohol abuse remains one of the main risk factors. Regular heavy drinking causes acute pancreatitis, a severe inflammation accompanied by severe pain, nausea and vomiting. Repeated episodes lead to chronic pancreatitis, when the pancreas loses its ability to function normally. Alcohol can activate enzymes ahead of time, causing them to destroy the gland tissue, and also provokes the formation of plugs and stones blocking the ducts.

Smoking is no less dangerous. It increases the likelihood of both inflammation and pancreatic cancer. Research shows that the more a person smokes, the higher the risk, and quitting cigarettes gradually reduces the threat. Nicotine disrupts cell function, and tobacco smoke carcinogens damage DNA, creating conditions for tumor growth.

Nutrition plays an essential role. Excess saturated fats, processed meats, and sweets increase the risk of pancreatitis. One of the common causes of acute inflammation is gallstones — they can block the ducts and trigger the launch of enzymes inside the gland. High levels of triglycerides are also dangerous: large fat particles disrupt blood supply and cause tissue damage. Sudden spikes in sugar from sugary foods create a constant strain on the hormonal function of the pancreas.

Obesity increases inflammatory processes and increases the risk of not only pancreatitis, but also pancreatic cancer. The fatty tissue around the organ disrupts its work, increases the level of pro-inflammatory substances and worsens insulin sensitivity.

An inactive lifestyle increases insulin resistance — the pancreas has to produce more and more insulin, which leads to overload. Regular exercise, on the contrary, strengthens the immune system, normalizes metabolism and reduces the likelihood of cancer.

Doctors emphasized that many risk factors can be changed. Reducing alcohol, quitting smoking, a balanced diet and physical activity significantly reduce the burden on the pancreas. It is recommended to consult a doctor if you have persistent abdominal pain, weight loss, nausea, greasy or foul-smelling stools, jaundice, or chronic fatigue.

Experts noted that understanding the mechanisms of pancreatic damage and early attention to the symptoms help prevent severe complications. Even small lifestyle adjustments can significantly reduce risks and maintain the stable functioning of this vital organ.

Earlier, on October 23, the doctors of "Health Mail" listed the symptoms of diabetes in children. Thirst, frequent urination, and weight loss with a good appetite were mentioned among the signs. Experts called the diagnosis too late the main problem.
