Zakharova pointed out that Ukraine does not meet the criteria for joining the EU
Ukraine does not meet any of the criteria for joining the European Union (EU). This was announced on November 20 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.
"I think that people who understand how the European Union works and by what criteria countries join have a clear understanding that Ukraine does not meet any of the stated criteria," she said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
According to Zakharova, there is no democracy on Ukrainian territory, as well as transparency of the judicial system and anti-corruption legislation. At the same time, she clarified that Ukraine's accession to the EU is necessary not for ordinary citizens of the union countries, but for the European bureaucracy, which pursues a policy that does not take into account the interests of the participating countries.
The day before, the head of the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee, David McAllister, said that the EU would not accelerate the process of Ukraine's accession "beyond its merits." McAllister also said that full EU membership for Ukraine will be possible only after fulfilling all the requirements and establishing peace.
Also on November 18, Polish Minister of National Defense Vladislav Kosinyak-Kamysh said that Ukraine, with a high level of corruption in the country, could not be admitted to the European Union.
