Germany appreciates the importance of cooperation with Russia on Nord Stream 2
The Russian-German dialogue can be restored in the future, and the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline will become one of the key elements. This was announced on November 17 by the head of the German Council for Constitution and Sovereignty, Ralf Niemeyer.
"I think that after its (special military operation. — Ed.) Russia and Germany will be able to have normal relations again. This will last for several more years, but I believe that an important element of this (cooperation. — Ed.) will become Nord Stream 2," he told RIA Novosti at the BRICS-Europe symposium.
According to the politician, Berlin will have to rethink its approach to providing the country with energy resources. He recalled that Russia has remained a reliable supplier for decades, while alternative purchases, including American and Qatari fuel, are more expensive.
Niemeyer also stressed that the German economy is going through a crisis, and a way out of it is possible only with joint efforts with Moscow. In this context, the Russian-German pipeline, according to him, is considered as one of the most significant peaceful ones.
Earlier, on September 4, Niemeyer said that the conclusion of a direct agreement between Russia and Germany on the Nord Stream gas pipeline would be more in the interests of Germany than Russia. According to him, American investor Stephen Lynch showed interest in buying the pipeline. And if the deal had taken place, Germany would have been forced to buy Russian gas at very inflated prices.
